The DDR5 standard is officially released, and the three original DRAM manufacturers DDR5 are ready to go!

JEDEC finally officially released the final specification of DDR5 (JESD79-5), which has higher bandwidth, lower power consumption, doubled the speed of the previous generation DDR4 to a maximum of 6.4Gbps, and the operating voltage has also dropped from 1.2V of DDR4 to 1.1V, and allows The capacity of a single memory chip can reach 64Gbit, the maximum capacity of a single server LRDIMM memory module can be up to 2TB, and the maximum capacity of consumer UDIMM memory module can be up to 128GB.

DDR5 products have already been deployed, and the three original DRAM factories are ready to go! In terms of the layout of the new generation of DDR5 products, Micron will start sampling DDR5 RDIMMs based on 1znm process technology in January 2020. Compared with the previous generation DDR4, the performance of DDR5 has increased by more than 85%, and the memory density has also doubled. Micron has also reached an agreement with a number of ecological partners to promote the use of DDR5 on the next-generation computing platform to meet the high-bandwidth and high-capacity requirements of next-generation server workloads and data center systems. Samsung announced in February 2020 that it has successfully developed a DDR5 chip, using a new through-silicon via (TSV) 8-layer technology, each dual in-line memory module (DIMM) provides up to 512GB of storage space, and also has error correction codes (ECC) circuit to improve product reliability. SK Hynix successfully developed 1ynm 16Gb DDR5 and released the first 2GB DDR5-6400 module as early as 2018, and cooperated with many companies to develop and test chips and modules to improve the DDR5 ecosystem. At the beginning of 2020, SK Hynix will display 64GB DDR5 RDIMM modules with ECC verification. DDR5 single Die will provide 8Gb, 16Gb, 24Gb, 32Gb, 64Gb capacity, which is larger than DDR4 capacity. Mass production is planned for the second half of 2020. In terms of advanced DRAM technology, the original Samsung, Micron, and SK Hynix factories will transition from 1ynm to 1znm in 2020, and begin planning for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) technology to promote further development of the technology. Compared with the layout of DDR5, LPDDR5 has begun to be used in high-end flagship machines, while DDR5 can be used in servers, high-end PCs and other markets later. Servers have an urgent need for high performance. Intel and AMD platforms are slow to support DDR5, and it will take another 2 years to wait Affected by the “epidemic” in 2020, demand for online services such as online meetings, online videos, and online education will be strong. As of the end of the second quarter of 2020, the number of ultra-large-scale data centers in the world has increased to 541, and the Chinese market will be in the next few years. X86 server market demand continues to be strong. IDC predicts that China’s X86 server market shipments will increase by 2.9% in 2020, and the compound growth rate will reach 9.1% during 2020-2024. As the demand in data centers, enterprises and other fields continues to increase, storage systems are under pressure in data processing. The server storage architecture not only needs to expand the space, but also urgently needs to further increase the processing speed. Therefore, the demand for higher performance DDR5 and PCIe SSD doubles .

In terms of platform support, Intel’s next-generation 10nm Xeon series Xeon Scalable processors code-named Sapphire Rapids will use 8-channel DDR5 memory, and support PCIe Gen 5.0 on the Eagle Stream platform, as well as support for the next-generation CXL bus and HBM2 memory. Optional support, AMD Zen4 Genoa processor may also support DDR5, but Intel will have to wait until the end of 2021, AMD will be available in 2022. At present, both the server and PC markets have already completed the upgrade from DDR3 to DDR4, occupying an absolute mainstream position. Although the final standard of DDR5 and the original DRAM factory have planned DDR5 products, Intel and AMD platforms are the key to realizing the popularity of DDR5. It is expected that DDR5 will be first applied to the server market in 2022, while the consumer market is expected to wait until 2022. It will be promoted and popularized in the high-end PC market after two years.
